Survivor & Dependent Benefits

The benefits a veteran earned extend to their family. Here's what spouses and dependents may qualify for.

National Cemetery Burial

Spouses and dependent children of eligible veterans may be buried in a VA national cemetery — free of charge, alongside the veteran. This applies to surviving spouses even if they remarry.

Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

A tax-free monetary benefit for surviving spouses, children, and parents of veterans who died from a service-connected condition or while on active duty. Current rate: $1,612.75/month for eligible surviving spouses.

Survivors Pension

Low-income surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of deceased wartime veterans may qualify for a pension benefit based on financial need.

Bereavement Counseling

The VA provides free bereavement counseling to surviving spouses, children, and parents of veterans through Vet Centers and VA medical centers.
